Periodontal care in Lake Forest

Scaling and Root Planing in Lake Forest, IL

When plaque hardens into tartar beneath the gumline, a routine cleaning may not reach the affected areas. Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical deep cleaning used to manage gum disease after an individualized periodontal evaluation at Ross & Durrett Family Dental. Since 1968, our practice has helped patients make informed decisions about their oral health.

01 / Scaling and Root Planing

A deeper clean for gum disease

Scaling removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, including within periodontal pockets. Root planing smooths irregular root surfaces so they are easier to keep clean and can give inflamed gum tissue an opportunity to heal. Our doctors will recommend whether treatment is completed in one visit or more than one based on the areas involved, and explain the planned sequence before beginning.

This treatment is different from a preventive dental cleaning. During an examination, our doctors look for signs such as deeper pockets, bleeding, inflammation, or other evidence of disease. Pocket measurements, your health history, and dental X-rays when appropriate help document the areas needing care.

  • Cleans deposits brushing and flossing cannot remove once tartar has formed.
  • Addresses tooth-root surfaces below the gumline.
  • May focus on selected areas rather than every tooth.

What to expect at your visit

Before treatment, our doctors review your findings and explain which areas need care. Our doctors will recommend whether scaling and root planing is performed in stages based on the extent and location of the deposits.

After treatment, your gums can feel tender or swollen and can bleed, and your teeth can be sensitive for several days; sensitivity can last up to about a week. Our team will review comfort measures and home-care instructions and schedule a healing check when repeat pocket measurements are needed.

  • Share pregnancy, medical conditions, allergies, tobacco use, and current medicines with our team.
  • Continue the recommended brushing and between-teeth cleaning routine after treatment.
  • Call us if pain, swelling, bleeding, or another concern is severe, worsening, or does not improve as directed.

03 / Scaling and Root Planing

Your next steps for healthier gums

Scaling and root planing is one part of periodontal care, not a substitute for daily plaque removal. Our doctors will recommend follow-up maintenance visits when your findings and response to care support them because gum disease can recur, especially when risk factors remain. At Ross & Durrett Family Dental, our doctors base the next step on your findings and response to care rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.

If nonsurgical treatment does not adequately control disease, our doctors can discuss additional periodontal therapy or referral to a periodontist; advanced disease can sometimes require surgery. If your findings fit gingivitis or manageable deposit buildup, our doctors will recommend a routine cleaning, home-care coaching, and monitoring.

  • Ask how pocket depths and gum inflammation will be reassessed.
  • Discuss whether a periodontist consultation is appropriate for your case.
  • Daily brushing, cleaning between teeth, regular visits, and avoiding tobacco support periodontal health.

Questions, answered clearly

Good questions are welcome.

Is scaling and root planing the same as a regular dental cleaning?

No. A regular preventive cleaning is intended for routine plaque and tartar removal, while scaling and root planing cleans below the gumline and along affected root surfaces. Our doctors consider it when an evaluation indicates gum disease that may not be addressed by a routine cleaning alone.

Will I need more periodontal treatment after scaling and root planing?

Possibly. Some patients need ongoing periodontal maintenance and consistent home care, while others need additional nonsurgical treatment or a periodontist referral if pockets remain deep or disease is advanced. A follow-up examination helps our doctors determine what is appropriate for your healing and findings.
