01 / Fluoride Treatment
How fluoride treatment supports your smile
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen enamel and support the repair of early mineral loss. During an in-office application, a dental professional places a concentrated topical fluoride product on the teeth; the product, amount, and instructions are selected for the patient.
Professional fluoride complements—not replaces—brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, limiting frequent sugary or acidic exposures, and keeping regular dental visits. Since 1968, Ross & Durrett Family Dental has helped patients make preventive care part of a long-term oral-health routine.
- May support enamel in areas vulnerable to decay or mineral loss
- Can complement daily fluoride toothpaste and other prevention habits
- Fits into an individualized, risk-based prevention plan

What to expect at your visit
Our doctors review your examination findings, health information, current fluoride products, water sources, sensitivities, and goals. For children, we also consider age, tooth development, fluoride already received, and the ability to avoid swallowing topical products. We then explain whether an application, routine prevention, or monitoring is the best next step.
- Tell our team about fluoride products, supplements, water sources, allergies, and swallowing concerns
- Children should use fluoride toothpaste and other fluoride products only as directed for their age
- After treatment, follow the product-specific eating, drinking, or brushing instructions provided

Is fluoride treatment right for you?
Our doctors may recommend professional fluoride when a patient has a history of cavities, early demineralization, exposed root surfaces, dry mouth, orthodontic appliances, difficulty cleaning, or another factor that raises decay risk. Treatment does not repair a cavity that needs a filling or replace an evaluation for tooth pain, swelling, or persistent sensitivity.
Some products can cause temporary taste or texture changes, mild gum irritation, or sensitivity. Reactions are uncommon; contact us if symptoms are concerning or do not settle. Our doctors will review your risk profile and discuss fluoride toothpaste, an age-appropriate rinse, a prescription-strength home fluoride product for selected patients, hygiene and diet changes, or closer preventive follow-up as options or complements.
- Do not add fluoride supplements or prescription products without dental or medical guidance
- Call (847) 234-8608 to schedule a preventive visit at 1400 N Western Avenue
Questions, answered clearly
Good questions are welcome.
Is fluoride treatment only for children?
No. Children are considered based on age and cavity risk, and some adults can benefit as well, including people with a history of decay, dry mouth, exposed roots, or other risk factors. Our doctors review each patient's fluoride exposure and oral-health findings before recommending it.
Can fluoride treatment prevent or fix every cavity?
No. Fluoride can help prevent decay and support enamel, but it does not prevent every cavity or replace treatment for progressed decay. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, managing frequent sugar and acid exposures, and attending dental visits remain important.
How do I find out whether I need fluoride treatment?
Call Ross & Durrett Family Dental at (847) 234-8608 to arrange a visit. Our doctors will review your oral-health history, examination findings, and current fluoride exposure, then explain the most appropriate preventive options.
