01 / TMD / TMJ Treatment

Understand what may be causing your symptoms

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) involve the jaw joints, the muscles used for chewing, or both. TMJ is the name for each temporomandibular joint. Symptoms can include pain in the jaw or chewing muscles, discomfort that reaches the face or neck, stiffness, limited movement or locking, and painful clicking, popping, or grating. A painless joint sound is common and does not automatically need treatment.

Facial, tooth, ear, neck, and headache symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so one symptom does not establish a TMD diagnosis. During an evaluation, our doctors will ask about when and how your pain occurs, examine jaw movement and tenderness, review your medical and dental history, and decide whether imaging or another clinician’s assessment is appropriate.

  • Jaw or facial pain, especially with chewing
  • Stiffness, limited opening, or a jaw that locks
  • Painful clicking, popping, or grating
  • A change in how your teeth fit together

Start with a plan tailored to you

Many TMD symptoms improve or settle without complex treatment. Based on the findings, our doctors will recommend short-term jaw rest, softer foods, avoiding gum and habits such as clenching or nail biting, heat or cold, and gentle exercises discussed with a qualified clinician. If symptoms persist or a specific disorder is identified, we can discuss an appliance that does not permanently change your bite, medication questions for your medical clinician, or physical therapy and behavioral-health support from appropriate professionals.

Our doctors will coordinate with or refer you to a physician, physical therapist, or dental or medical specialist when a concern is outside our scope or needs additional expertise.

  • Begin with reversible, lower-risk measures when appropriate
  • Review an appliance’s purpose, fit, follow-up, and stop-use instructions
  • Reassess if pain, locking, bite changes, or function changes

Know when an evaluation makes sense

An evaluation can make sense when jaw or chewing pain persists, affects daily activities, or occurs with restricted movement, locking, or a notable change in your bite. A painless click by itself is not a reason to pursue treatment. Bring a list of symptoms, medications, injuries, and prior treatments so our doctors can discuss benefits, limitations, alternatives, risks, and follow-up before you decide.

  • Ask how a proposed treatment may help your specific diagnosis
  • Discuss what to expect and when to contact the office
  • Seek urgent medical or dental attention for major trauma, rapidly worsening swelling, fever, inability to open or close the mouth, or trouble breathing or swallowing

Questions, answered clearly

Good questions are welcome.

Does every jaw click require TMJ treatment?

No. Painless clicking or popping is common and often does not require treatment. An evaluation is more important when a sound is painful or occurs with jaw stiffness, locking, limited movement, facial pain, or a change in how your teeth fit together.

Will a night guard cure my TMD?

Not necessarily. An intraoral appliance can protect teeth or help with clenching habits for some patients, but it is not a universal cure. If one is recommended, ask about its purpose, how it will be monitored, and what to do if it causes pain.
