Restorative Care in Lake Forest

Root Canal Therapy in Lake Forest, IL

When inflammation or infection reaches the soft tissue inside a tooth, root canal therapy can remove diseased tissue, clean the canals, and seal the tooth instead of extracting it. Ross & Durrett Family Dental provides thoughtful evaluation for pain, sensitivity, swelling, or a diagnosis that needs a closer look.

01 / Root Canal Therapy

When root canal therapy can help

The pulp—the living tissue containing nerves and blood vessels inside a tooth—can become inflamed or infected after deep decay, a crack or fracture, repeated dental work, or an injury. Symptoms can include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain with biting, spontaneous toothache, swelling, or an abscess; some teeth cause little warning. An examination and appropriate imaging help our doctors understand whether the pulp and tissues around the root are involved.

Root canal therapy is considered when a tooth has enough healthy structure and supporting bone to restore it predictably. Our doctors will review your tooth, health history, and goals before recommending treatment. Based on the damage, they will discuss another restoration, monitoring in limited situations, referral to an endodontist, or extraction followed by discussion of replacement choices. Facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or rapidly worsening pain needs urgent dental or medical guidance.

  • Deep decay or a large existing restoration
  • A cracked, fractured, or injured tooth
  • Persistent tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, or tenderness
  • Swelling or signs of infection near a tooth

What to expect during treatment

After reviewing your symptoms, examination findings, and images, our doctors will explain the proposed approach. Root canal treatment generally involves numbing the area, creating an access opening, removing inflamed or infected pulp, cleaning and shaping the canals, and filling and sealing that space. Treatment can take one or more visits, and a specialist referral can be recommended when a case is unusually complex or requires specialized care.

The treated tooth commonly needs a definitive restoration—often a filling or crown—to protect the remaining tooth structure. Our doctors will recommend the restoration based on which tooth it is and how much structure remains. Mild tenderness can occur for a few days. Follow your individualized aftercare instructions, avoid chewing hard foods on a tooth with a temporary filling unless instructed otherwise, and keep the follow-up appointment for the permanent restoration or reassessment.

  • Bring a current medication list and mention allergies or relevant health conditions.
  • Ask about aftercare before you leave, especially if a temporary filling is placed.
  • Contact the office if discomfort worsens, swelling develops, or your bite feels uneven.

Questions, answered clearly

Good questions are welcome.

Does root canal therapy hurt?

Local anesthesia is used to numb the tooth and surrounding area, and many patients find treatment more comfortable than the pain of the infection itself. Tenderness or sensitivity for a few days is possible. Comfort varies by tooth, infection, and individual health factors, so share your concerns and any symptom changes with our doctors.

How long does root canal treatment take?

Treatment can be completed in one visit or can take more than one, based on the tooth, the extent of inflammation or infection, and the complexity of the canals. The tooth often needs a later filling or crown. Our doctors will discuss the anticipated sequence at your consultation.

Is extraction the only alternative to a root canal?

Not necessarily. Our doctors will discuss another restoration, observation in select circumstances, specialist care, or extraction with a replacement plan based on the tooth’s remaining structure, the pulp and surrounding tissues, restorability, and your goals. Your examination and imaging will guide that discussion.
