01 / Sports Guards

Protect your smile during play

A face-first impact can chip, fracture, loosen, or displace a tooth and may injure the lips, cheeks, or tongue. A sports guard creates a resilient barrier over the upper teeth to help cushion impact, giving athletes another layer of protection alongside the equipment and safety guidance required for their sport.

Sports guards can help protect athletes in contact and collision sports, as well as activities where falls, speed, or equipment create a risk of dental injury. They can be useful for athletes of any age or skill level, including recreational participants.

  • Football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and martial arts
  • Bicycling, skating, skiing, gymnastics, and skateboarding
  • Youth, adult, competitive, and recreational activities

What to expect when choosing a guard

During a consultation, our doctors can discuss the activity, comfort, retention, preferences, growth and changing teeth, orthodontic appliances, and fixed dental work that may affect your choice. A dentist-made guard is individually adapted, while stock and boil-and-bite guards are alternatives; our doctors will recommend an option based on your needs.

Rinse a guard before and after use, clean it as directed, and let it dry in a ventilated case away from heat, pets, and direct sun. Bring it to checkups for a fit and wear review, and replace it when it is damaged, worn, or no longer fits. Children and teens may need replacement as their mouths change.

  • Ask about a guard designed for braces or fixed bridge work.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions exactly when molding a boil-and-bite guard.
  • Do not wear a removable retainer during contact sports unless your dentist or orthodontist specifically instructs you to do so.

When to schedule an evaluation

Our doctors will recommend an evaluation before a new season, a new sport, orthodontic treatment, or a major change in your bite, and when a guard rubs, slips, interferes with your bite, or makes breathing or speaking difficult. If a tooth is knocked out, displaced, or badly fractured, seek urgent dental care; handle a knocked-out permanent tooth only by its crown, avoid scrubbing the root, and place it in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution if available while contacting a dentist.

  • Bring your current guard if you would like its fit or condition reviewed.
  • Call promptly after a mouth injury, even when pain or visible damage seems limited.

Questions, answered clearly

Good questions are welcome.

Do I need a sports guard for a non-contact sport?

A guard can be worth considering when an activity involves falls, speed, or fast-moving equipment. Our doctors can discuss the activity, your dental history, and the available guard options with you.

Can I wear a sports guard with braces or a retainer?

Ask our doctors about a guard designed for your orthodontic appliance, since fit needs reassessment as treatment changes. Do not wear a removable retainer during contact sports unless your dentist or orthodontist tells you to.

How do I know when to replace a sports guard?

Replace it if it is damaged, worn, or no longer fits. Children and teens can need replacement as their teeth and jaws change. Bring it to a checkup for a fit and wear review, or call Ross & Durrett Family Dental at (847) 234-8608 to schedule an evaluation.
